Notice: Postponed Event

Due to Hurricane Milton and its effects on the community, we have decided to postpone the 25th Annual De Soto Charity Golf Tournament.  Many in our community have been affected, and we want to prioritize everyone’s well-being. We will announce a new date soon. Our hearts go out to all those impacted during this challenging time.

Desoto Ambassador - Student Exchange Program

Fostering cultural understanding, strengthening relationships, and creating lifelong connections between the residents of Bradenton and Barcarrota.

The Hernando de Soto Historical Society’s Student exchange program is a valuable initiative that fosters cultural exchange and strengthens the bond between Bradenton, Florida, and its Sister City, Barcarrota, Spain. This program has been made possible through a generous donation by Dr. Art Engelhard, a member of the De Soto Historical Society.

For almost four decades, delegates from Barcarrota have visited Bradenton each year to participate in the annual Festival, and vice versa. This exchange program serves as an opportunity for residents of both cities to immerse themselves in each other’s cultures and forge lasting connections.

One of the highlights of the program is the selection of a Bradenton resident to travel to Spain for the summer. This individual gets to experience the richness of Spanish culture firsthand during their approximately 10-week stay. This immersive experience allows them to gain a deep appreciation for the relationship between the two cities.

In reciprocation, a Barcarrota student travels to Bradenton later in the year to learn about American culture. This exchange provides an invaluable opportunity for cross-cultural learning and understanding.

Former Ambassador Trey Horne, who participated in the program, expressed his gratitude on his blog, writing “I have never felt so at home while being more than 4,000 miles away from home.” He encourages all members of the Hernando de Soto Historical Society to make the trip to Barcarrota, praising the warmth and kindness of its people.

This year, the Student Ambassador representing Bradenton is Robyn Bell. She will embark on her journey on June 22nd and return on August 18th. As she immerses herself in the Spanish culture and lifestyle, Robyn will undoubtedly gain a new perspective and return home with a deeper understanding of the special bond between Bradenton and Barcarrota.

Overall, the Hernando de Soto Historical Society’s Student exchange program plays a vital role in fostering cultural understanding, strengthening relationships, and creating lifelong connections between the residents of Bradenton and Barcarrota.
