The Hernando de Soto Historical Society is a nonprofit organization that celebrates the historical significance of Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto’s landing near the mouth of the Manatee River in May of 1539. Throughout the year, the Crewe of De Soto plans and organizes some of the largest events in Manatee County. Their fundraising efforts financially support their sister organization, the Conquistador Historical Foundation, which annually donates to community charities and provides scholarships to the Queen, Princess, and Queen’s Court, and funding the Student Ambassador program with Barcarrota, Spain, Bradenton’s Sister city.
Hernando de Soto Historical Society’s fundraising event, Amigos Tapas, was created by the Amigos de Barcarrota, a Society committee that hosts their friends from Barcarrota, Spain, that visit Bradenton each year during their weeklong Heritage Festival in April. This group houses guests in their own homes and entertains them daily by visiting some of the best Manatee County attractions, including beaches, restaurants, and of course, all of the Heritage Festival week events, like the De Soto Coronation Ball and Dinner, and the Grand Parade – ensuring an unforgettable experience.
